The 2018 AM Heath Prize for Fiction
I’m thrilled to say my novel-in-progress, The Swimmers, has been named as the recipient of the AM Heath Prize for Fiction.
Of my work the judges said:
"There is a striking authenticity to Rebecca Slater's portrait of a teen moving into adulthood. I was hugely impressed by the delicate way she conveys the vivid, immediate sensations of that summer, and weaves in the complicated perspective of an adult narrator looking back on it. With an incredibly light touch she manages to convey the damage done to this young girl on the cusp of womanhood.
I thought this an exceptionally poised piece of work and loved the restrained elegance of the prose and the perfectly calibrated drip-feed of information. It was a particularly strong field this year but this, for me, was the stand out submission. I am extremely pleased to have been introduced to Rebecca's work."
Many thanks to AM Heath for supporting the prize and to Oxford University’s MSt in Creative Writing program.
